america's cup and a couple of baseball games, giants playoff games. >> you can feel the magic right now and csn bay area's amy gutierrez has some inside scoop. she managed to sneak her way into at&t park this morning. amy, good morning. what's going on? okay, apparently we're having some difficulties getting amy but she will hang tight for us. giants getting it going here but this entire postseason comcast sportsnet bay area will bring you sports in its central october quest. pregame one hour before every game. postgame coverage immediately following that final out. >> it's the only place that we'll be able to see all the behind-the-scenes action there and we'll bring it to you. there's so much going on this weekend in the bay area. from the ballparks to the bay to water, even in this massive ballotship this weekend as the america's cup race and fleet

week actually come together. >> bob redell is already checking out the action. he's checking out one of those lightweight sail boats and today he's on board the heavy equipment. joining us live from the uss macon island which is right there in san francisco. bob, sounds like a big bash. >> reporter: yeah, this is what you might call a small ship. it's only over 800 feet in length. we're on the uss macon island, we're actually below deck where you can see they have some of the u.s. marines equipment. the marines typically deploy with these type of ships. this is an amphibious assault ship. one size smaller than an aircraft carrier to give you some perspective. this is the well deck. right in the back here you can see they have got two hover craft here on this deck in the situation if they need it so they can submerge it into the water so the hover craft can leave. we've got senior chief don ryan. hey, good morning and thanks for being with us. >> hey, good morning. >> reporter: i'm trying to get an idea what kind of scenario

you would have being deployed here. >> well, we are an amphibious assault ship so we get the marine as shore two ways. basically what they do is carry the marines and the heavy equipment to shore to take care of the mission, whatever it may be. it could be combat operations, also humanitarian assistance and disaster response. >> reporter: we saw one of these hover craft coming ashore on ocean beach the other day. it was quite a sight. i'm trying to get a sense from a general engineer point of view, that whoever would want to sink the stern of the ship. how far into the water does she go? >> we can go several feet. the hover craft, we don't have to go very far, 0 to 6 inches. of course they raise up on air and take off. if we had some of the other amphibious assault vehicles, we could flood the well in order to float those vessels out to take care of the mission with those types of equipment.

>> reporter: and she's a young ship, commissioned in '09. just came back from her maiden mission off the horn of africa, returned in june. will she be going back out any time soon? >> well, that's right. the ship was commissioned in '09. we did do our maiden deployment from november until june, about seven months we operated over in the fifth fleet in the middle eastern area and asia as well. right now conducting local opes off the coast of california and as the navy, we're always ready to do any mission at any time that we're tasked with. >> reporter: glad to have you here. visiting hours 10 to 3, 9 to 3? >> 9 to 3. >> reporter: starting tomorrow? >> saturday, sunday, monday. >> reporter: through monday. if you're going to show up at 2:00, probably not going to get on board because it's a very popular attraction. you must be at least 8 years or older. so jon, you just made the age cutoff if you want to see the uss macon island here at pier 30

t 32. >> you better get an early start if you want to head there. don't forget other things to do there. 49ers, america's cup and, oh, yeah, a couple of giants playoff games. >> playoff fever is upon us and amy gutierrez must know some people. she's managed to sneak her way into at&t park. amy, it's your world. tell us what's going on. >> reporter: yeah, jon, it's pretty good that i'm here a lot. they let me in pretty much at the crack of dawn. it's eerily quiet here at at&t park. i'm usually here about 12 hours later in the day as the buzz gets going, but the buzz will start shortly. there's a rot that will be happening in preparation for that first game as the giants will be facing the reds. matt cain on the mound for the giants, johnny cueto for the reds. the giants clinched on september 22nd and since they have just

been playing steady ball, .five 00 ball. they have gone 5-5 since clinching here at home. manager bruce bochy announced yesterday his game two starter, madison bumgarner but has not given any other information. he's going with a four-man rotation in the playoffs. the fifth starter to be determined will be in the bullpen. as far as activities here at at&t park today, you're going to see a lot of field changes. they're going to be painting the postseason logo. it's a new logo that just reads postseason. mlb decided to stick with the same logo throughout the nlds and nlcs. it's orange friday. there will be a party at willie mays plaza, the public is welcome to come. game time on saturday at 7:00.

>> amy, we're happy to see you sporting your san francisco giants orange. looking shop oarp out there. nice work. we've got to keep tabs. it was tank tops earlier this week. now a light sweater for the weekend? >> you might be pulling out your winter coat by the end of the weekend. we've got cold air and moisture on the way. i just want to break it down for you in these terms. just count on maybe getting a little drizzle, light rain showers overhead but don't plan on a rainout for that game on saturday or sunday, but we do have slight chances for showers. it's a crisp start in santa rosa at 49 degrees, 58 in oakland and 60 to start you out in sunnyvale this morning. your forecast works like this. 72 degrees at noon. you'll be at about 76 degrees inland in the heat of the day. bayside around 71 and 69 degrees at 4:00 p.m. all right, let's get to it. those giants, we are so happy for them. they are going to the playoffs, as you heard. matt cain taking the mound

tomorrow with pretty comfortable weather overhead. 66 degrees. and then of course we're not going to leave out our other boys, the 49ers on sunday. if you're headed to either of these games make sure you're ready to weather. i don't think we'll see any delays, i'm not expecting anything heavy but it's going to be cool, cloudy and a little drizzly. we'll get to your full forecast coming up in just a few minutes. we want to check on your drive first with mike. >> it might also affect tailgating too. we're looking over here to the bay bridge. easy drive right now. this is oakland where we saw the earlier construction lights. you no longer lose the lane north at high street. we still have crews on our map. i've circled the same area and just north of the coliseum you do see construction zones active north of high street headed up toward 980. we will also look at the flow of traffic getting into the city starting today and building throughout the weekend, fleet week as well as a lot of other

activities, including the giants game. we're looking off of 680, reports of a minor accident off to the shoulder and also the fairgrounds have a lot of activities this weekend as well. there's a convention there. can't leave the east bay out of all of this and we won't as far as traffic flow goes. an accident eastbound at livermore avenue off of the roadway. westbound not enough of an issue to be a distraction, but we'll track this as the commute starts to build even now on a friday. a live look outside shows you the peninsula. 101, a light flow through palo alto past university into the city no problem for 101 here. south through san rafael, a smooth drive here as well. a reminder for the north bay, you will see congestion because you can see the fleet week activities and flyovers. a lot of people do that as you approach the golden gate bridge. take the ferries into the city if you can. back to you. our coverage of the bay's big weekend just getting started. we'll have live coverage throughout the morning for you

and all weekend long. read all about it, all the events, how to get around the delays, even up-to-the-minute weather changes, head to n nbcbayarea.com or follow us on facebook or twitter. if you're planning on going anywhere in your car this weekend, brace yourself for some shock and awe at the gas pump. prices jumping more than 15 cents a gallon overnight. monte francis is live in cupertino right now. at one station i'm looking at this. one station says it's over $5 0 $5.30, is this right, my man? >> reporter: here here at a 76 station where they're selling regular unleaded for $5.39. we also have the new aaa report which shows bay area gas prices are up across the board. prices spiked overnight. in san francisco the price is up by 16 cents from $4.43 to $4.59.

in oakland it was $4.34 yesterday. this morning, $4.52. in san jose the average was $4.37 and it's now up to $4.53. analysts are attributing the increase to some mishaps at refineries and problems with an pipeline. the chevron refinery in richmond is also cited as a contributing factor. all of this is hitting bay area drivers very hard and taking many of them by surprise. >> it's actually never knew that the prices were this high. i haven't got gas in about a week or so. so i was pretty shocked. that's pretty crazy. >> reporter: in southern california the gas shortage forced some costco gas stations and a few others to shut down. as for any relief any time soon, analysts are predicting prices will continue to rise in the

american airlines expecting more delays across the country the next few days. this morning we are learning one of those flights is out of sfo. the airline has already cancelled dozens of flights as

it's scrambling to fix seats in its boeing 757. the airline it is announcing every seat on every 757 will be in secure place when it finally reaches its destination today. earlier this week we told you about how some of those seats had actually come loose during flight. not that it's going to make any passengers feel any better but the pilot seats also having problems. it actually happened on a flight last night. one of the pilot seats came loose on a flight to philadelphia. delayed about 90 minutes as the airline tried to fix the pilot's seat issue. american airlines has already cancelled 44 flights today and america flight 2042 from sfo to miami has also been cancelled today. >> you've got to hold on but to what? its 5:15 and the newest job numbers are due out in just minutes. we have a preview and how futures are reacting. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura.

futures are a touch higher this morning. stocks posted decent gains yesterday on the back of positive news on the job market as unemployment claims rose less than expected last week. the market stayed higher after the fed released minutes from its last meeting, noting officials believe they can manage any risk associated with their latest economic stimulus program. and today's focus is on the monthly jobs report, which is expected to show modest payroll growth, but still not enough to make a dent in unkploiemploymen which is seen holding at 8.1%. the dow rising 80 points yesterday to 13,575. the nasdaq up 14 to 3149. and sony has halted sales of its new tablet which it launched in the u.s. just a month ago. the company has discovered a gap between the device's screen and case that could make it susceptible to water damage. sony has been touting it as water resistant.

now the company won't say when it may restart those sales. it is just one of the latest entrants into the crowd of tablet markets which is dominated by the apple ipad. >> all right, thank you very much. 5:17. back to some baseball. a's fans just enjoying the moment, reliving their team's incredible run, especially this historic week. >> oakland becomes the first team ever to win a division after trailing by five or more games with nine to go. now they head to detroit to beat -- begin -- i should say beat too. >> i like the positive thinking. >> yeah, begin the alds. casey pratt live in detroit setting the scene for us. good morning. >> reporter: how are you doing, jon and laura. let me tell you, it's drizzling right now in detroit. the tarp is on the field. the a's are in detroit, they are about 30 minutes away at the team hotel. they'll be working out here about 3:30, which is 12:30 your

the way for today but tomorrow when that game will take place, the showers subside, so that's great news for the a's. we have a little bit of shower activity in our own forecast, but don't count on any rain delays out at at&t park. just expecting a little drizzle and we're all accustomed to that if you've lived in the bay area for any duration of time. we want to look at the palace of fine arts. you can see it and temperatures are much cooler, running 10 degrees cooler in santa rosa. as we head throughout the afternoon, your temperatures are going to climb, but not by much. only into the 60s by noon and we'll round out the day in the 70s bayside and inland. low pressure finally moves onshore. this is our weather maker. as we head throughout the next couple of days, cloudy conditions, a cool ocean breeze will persist. you'll probably need that jacket in the city by the bay. when it comes to viewing those blue angels, we do have some concerns. for today 69 degrees in san jose, 73 in concord and right around 63 degrees in san

francisco. so, yeah, down from 97 on monday. a significant dropoff. here it is, your fleet week forecast, ladies and gentlemen. as you know, the fog rolls in early morning. it should clear between the hours of about noon and 4:00 p.m. each day, so you are going to be able to see the blue angels. we could see some of those low clouds obstruct your vision as we head through sunday. that would be the best chance for that but we're looking really good around here for that visibility. i will be live on saturday giving you live updates on comcast sportsnet bay area. our sister station right here nbc bay area. monday and tuesday we keep that drizzle in the forecast, feeling cool and feeling like fall, finally giving your ac a wrebre for a stretch. let's check your drive. hi, mike. this is north 101 underneath the 680 interchange so light volume here. we're showing the same area, right around where it says allen rock. this is 101 heading north just

north of 680. easy drive. we see some little blips. not a major concern for your northbou northbound routes. we have a problem mission, on to or off of mission from 880 is an issue as you're heading over towards 680. that's a major cutover at the funnel but you can use auto mall parkway until this construction crew clears. over the next 20 minutes, they should be completely cleared from the area. at the bay bridge toll plaza, there's an easy drive right now, volume building just a tad bit, but not a problem. but starting now and heading through the weekend, folks getting into the city for all of those activities will be very congested. consider mass transit. we talk about b.a.r.t., also the ferries. we look at the peninsula where there's an easy drive northbound heading up past willow, through san mateo into the city as well. along the peninsula caltrain is a good option as well. all your transit agencies

prepared for this onslaught. once you get don't, you don't have to look for parking. that is a big advantage. it is 5:22 and there's a brief break in the trial of the woman accused of killing east bay nursing student michelle le. testimony will now resume on tuesday. jurors given a lot to think about yesterday when a number of witnesses testified gisele esteban went to great lengths to find le. she made phone calls pretending to be le and stole a security badge to rifle through university records. now, prosecutors say she actually pieced together enough information to then confront le in the parking garage at kaiser permanente in hayward on may 27th. esteban's lawyers argue that le's death was a crime of passion and not premeditated. the mother accused of ditching her 10-year-old daughter during a grocery store shoplifting attempt is back in the bay area. we've got new video of 38-year-old marcy keelin walking into the santa clara county main

jail. she was arrested last week in reno. she drove away from a morgan hill safeway, leaving her daughter with a cartload of groceries which weren't paid for. a week later keelin was found in nevada. her family says she suffered from depression. she'll be charged with felony commercial burglary and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. it's 5:23. i guess we can forget texting while driving. what about texting and walking? the new danger for kids coming up.

we can tell you all this hot weather not helping out the contra costa county. six new case of west nile virus discovered there. six birds tested positive for the virus in six different cities. brentwood, concord, discovery pay, pleasant hill, walnut creek

and oakley all affected. experts say mosquitos just thrive big-time in all the warm weather and heat, and that heat allows that virus to grow rapidly. it is time to start talking to kids about when and where they use their cell phones. researchers analyzed data from 1400 children treated in the e.r. after being hit by a car. nearly one in five patients from 13 to 17 were texting, listening to music or distracted by a mobile device when they were hit. >> i actually saw a man at a mall texting with her head down and fell into a fountain. just literally flipped right into a fountain. just focused texting. i'm going to be a little late, i'm wet. >> no kidding. we're going to get wet eventually, right? but in the north bay? what a change in temperatures, christina. >> yeah, almost a 25 to 30-degree dropoff as we head through this afternoon from where we started out the week. yeah, we have hit or miss showers mostly north of the golden gate bridge.

it is 5:31. good morning, everybody. always happy to have you with us. i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. time to crack open those waltz. bay area gas prices are soaring just in time for your weekend travel plans. prices, believe it or not, jumped more than 15 cents overnight. some stations already selling it for more than $5 a gallon. look at that. live look at oakland this morning. >> that hurts my eyes. >> premium, $5.13. sorry to say the news even worse in the south bay. monte francis is live in cupertino where you're going to pay more than five bucks a gallon for the cheap stuff even. >> reporter: laura, good morning. you can see that a gallon of regular unleaded here behind me in cupertino is selling for $5.39. as you said statewide, gas prices are up by 15 cents on average. now so why is this happening?

analysts say mishaps at some of the state's 14 refineries are causing a statewide gas shortage along with a problem with a pipeline that supplies gasoline to valero and shell stations. the chevron refinery fire is having some effect. in southern california the shortage forced some costco stations to shut down and all of this is having a huge impact on drivers here in the bay area, many of whom are being forced to shell out more than $100 in some cases just to fill up. >> i'm going to stop because it's outrageous. i can go elsewhere. i've got enough to get home and that's all i'm worried about. >> with the gas prices rising and my income level staying the same, it's very difficult to, you know, to be able to afford gas and other things and rent and things like that. >> reporter: and take a look at this. in san francisco, the price of gas is up overnight by 16 cents from $4.43 to $4.59.

this morning -- in oakland it was $4.34 and this morning it's up to $4.52. in san jose the average was $4.37 and today it's up to $4.53. as for any relief any time soon, analysts are predicting prices could actually go higher in the coming weeks. monte francis, "today in the bay." some breaking news right now, the labor department has just released the latest unemployment reports and there's good news here as u.s. employers adding 114,000 jobs last while unemployment dropping to 7.8%. and that's a big-time boost. that is the first time it has dropped below 8% in four years. now, this is the second-to-last unemployment report we'll be seeing before election day. and you know the romney camp and the obama camp are all over this. coming up at 5:40 we'll have a live report from washington, d.c., with a look at what all these numbers could mean big-time in that presidential race. >> no doubt they'll be taking

board the uss macon island. exclusive, the only station on there. bob redell is our guy, our big gun out there checking it out, bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon and laura. you can't miss the uss macon island if you're driving up or down the embarcadero here in san francisco. here's in pier 3032. we are atop the weather deck which is about four decks above the flight deck. she looks like an aircraft carrier, but she's not. we've got senior chief don ryan here. how is she different than an aircraft carrier? >> well, we're a little shorter. 847 feet long. aircraft carrier is just a little over 1,000. care craft carriers are nuclear powder and we're not. >> she wouldn't take fighter jets? >> absolutely not. we don't have the catapults for

the fighters. we're helicopters and hairier jump jet capable. >> reporter: a lot of that is marine equipment so you can have a thousand sailors, as many as 1200 marines deployed onboard and you are talking about her propulsion system. i can hear the humming in the background. she's one of the first green ships in the navy? >> that's correct. we are the first amphibious assault ship with the hybrid lk propulsion system. huge cost savings for the navy. during our recent deployment, saved about $15 million in fuel cost for the u.s. taxpayer compared to other ships like that. >> reporter: thank you very much, chief. the tours are from 9 to 3, 10 to 3? >> 9 to 3. >> reporter: saturday through monday. you do want to get here early because these are very popular destinations, these navy ships here during fleet week. do you guys have a quarter? >> i'll spare some change for you, bob. check it out for us.

now to the breaking news this morning. the latest unemployment report that shows 114,000 jobs added, 7.8% unemployment rate. this is the first time that it's been under 8% in about four years. sure to draw some reaction on the campaign trail today. brian mooar joins us live from washington, d.c. this morning. he's live on capitol hill with the latest. this certainly is going to be a topic for today. good morning. >> reporter: well, laura, a lot of hurt eyebrows from all the eyebrow raising this morning. work with me on that one. unexpected. here's the reason. we got a thousand jobs less than

expected last month. that's right on target, essentially, but we expected the unkploiemployment rate to go up. instead it went down. down pretty heftily. and a reason is a revision in the august job numbers. we added 142,000, that pushes the unemployment rate down to 7.8%, the lowest since january, 2009. below 8% is a really important sort of psychological threshold. no american president has been elected -- re-elected, that is, with an unemployment rate above 7.3 so that certainly gets us down to that level. president obama probably not popping champagne corks at this point. he will be able to make the argue credibly today that this is a slow but steady recovery. mitt romney will be able to argue that this is sort of a flat line, low gear american

recovery and that he could do a better job of creating jobs if he had a chance. but certainly we're expecting the unemployment rate to pop up at least a point to 8.1%. instead it dropped down a couple of percentage -- tens of a percentage point, so this is good news. probably not great news, though, for either candidate of. >> it will be interesting to see how they all spin it. >> 5:45. we're jumping on nice, cool temperatures. it felt a little crisp when i came out. >> that will add to the good mood friday already provides to many of us. good morning to you. we want to take you outside and show you what it looks like over the bay bridge. still have good visibility here but we are noticing those low clouds rolling in. they rolled in very quickly overnight and so as a result we're going to see dense fog. the most widespread point will be between 6:00 and 8:00 this morning so about 15 minutes away from those visibilities dropping

city, you have plenty of options for outdoor plans this weekend. it's going to be nice. not a great beach weekend. however, taking the kids to the park in san jose should be comfortable at 69 degrees there today. saturday and sunday temperatures fall even more so getting a little drizzle monday, tuesday and wednesday. of course monday is also columbus day. that's going to be a big shopping day, so traffic is going to be problematic to say the least, mike, what do you think? >> i think parking will be at a premium in the city and around the mall. looking over here, 880, the nimitz freeway, we see the push as the volume goes up past high street but chp reported an accident at this scene. i have scanned the area and haven't seen any problems, just the build. the maps will show you the same area where i've cancelled it right here. again, some construction just north of the coliseum. the caldecott tunnel for 24 moves smoothly as well as the east shore freeway. all of these routes will push

into the city because of all of the activities. starting today b.a.r.t. has added trains, added service to help alleviate some of that roadway congestion, but keep in mind we have america's cup, we have fleet week along the embarcadero and that will create a great deal of congestion. consider taking your bike over there. we've got a live look outside to see traffic along the peninsula. 101 moves smoothly with the headlights going past university shopping center and we do have a smooth drive along the peninsula as well. caltrain a good option if you're going to see the giants this weekend. we'll end in san jose. 280, not much drama but more cars northbound heading up toward the 880/280 interchange. back to you. and we have new details this morning in the sexual abuse case involving a teacher at albany middle school. police say several victims have now come forward. james izumizaki was arrested last week on suspicion of lewd

acts with a former student. he was found dead in his car less than a week later. a new report, police now confirm his death was a suicide. police also say several girls have come forward claiming the teacher molested them. the arrest and death shocked the school and many say police acted rashly. the investigation is ongoing. in a sad and unusual twist, a contra costa man has died of rabies, the result of a bat bite. this morning county health officials addressing that issue. the centers for disease control and prevention says the 34-year-old man was actually bitten in the bay area back in march but wasn't admitted to a hospital until early july in dubai where he was there working abroad. he was then transferred to a hospital in switzerland where he ultimately died just weeks later. health officials point out they are notifying dozens of people in contra costa who may have

contacted him between march and july while he was actually infectious. rabies, for the record, can be spread from person to person through tears and saliva. one year ago today tragedy struck at a south bay business. three people were killed, seven others hurt when an employee walked into a morning meeting at the lehigh cement plant in cupertino and opened fire. a manhunt immediately followed. police shot the man in a nearby neighborhood but through an autopsy it revealed he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. a close friend said allman felt he was being treated differently at work and was upset about being written up. one year later people are still deeply affected by the tragedy. the cement company has issued this statement. quote, it has been near low a year since the tragedy of october 2011 and our employees and families continue to mourn our shared loss. and today marks one year since the death of apple ceo and co-founder steve jobs. jobs died of pancreatic cancer

last october. the city of cupertino has ordered the city flag be flown at half staff at the civic center all day today. that is where jobs made his last public presentation to the city council when he revealed plans for apple's new campus. that happened last june n a statement from the mayor, he says steve grew up and went to school in cupertino. his company and vision grew, so our entire community came to realize we can change the world for the better. placing our city flag at half staff is a small reminder of the profound and very local impact this man had on our community. >> what a legacy to leave behind. it's out standing. >> yes, forever. 5:51. coming up, why the feds are investigating a local university. plus a controversial move by the boy scouts of america has tens of thousands of people coming out to support an east bay teenager. here you go little man.

welcome back, everyone. 5:54. a moraga teenager being turned away by one of the most well-known groups in america because he is gay. the boy scouts of america told him and his family he will not be given the honor because he recently shared his orientation with family and friends. in fact the organization released a statement saying because of anderson's sexual orientation and he did not agree to scoutings's principle of duty to god, he's no longer eligible for membership in scouting. the executive director of the national center for lesbian rights says the boy scouts are not breaking the law, but -- >> it is wrong to say that someone who is honorable, who did everything that is required to be an eagle scout, that is withheld from him simply because

of his sexual orientation. they're on the wrong side of history. >> his mother started a petition on change.org hoping to get the organization to change its mind. there are more than 123,000 supporters who have already pledged support. a federal investigation is under way on the cal campus this morning. this coming after a group of students filed a complaint accusing the school of being anti-semitic. they say the university allowed an anti-israel protest on campus which the students say makes for a hostile campus for jewish students. officials say had they stopped the protest, it would have infringed on free speech rights. a 10-year-old san jose girl, talk about a happy ending here, reunited with the little puppy that was ripped off from her house. >> i want to say thank you to everybody who made this happen. >> oh, she's just so sweet and
